Gradients for Retinotectal Mapping
نویسنده
چکیده
The initial activity-independent formation of a topographic map in the retinotectal system has long been thought to rely on the matching of molecular cues expressed in gradients in the retina and the tectum. However, direct experimental evidence for the existence of such gradients has only emerged in the past two years. The new data has provoked the discussion of a new set of models in the experimental literature. Here, these models are subjected to a rigourous theoretical analysis.

Complementary gradients in expression and binding of ELF-1 and Mek4 in development of the topographic retinotectal projection map
Topographic maps with a defined spatial ordering of neuronal connections are a key feature of brain organization. Such maps are believed to develop in response to complementary position-specific labels in presynaptic and postsynaptic fields. However, the complementary labeling molecules are not known. In the well-studied visual map of retinal axons projecting to the tectum, the labels are hypot...
متن کاملTopographic Mapping in Dorsoventral Axis of the Xenopus Retinotectal System Depends on Signaling through Ephrin-B Ligands
Ephrin-B and EphB are distributed in matching dorsoventral gradients in the embryonic Xenopus visual system with retinal axons bearing high levels of ligand (dorsal) projecting to tectal regions with high receptor expression (ventral). In vitro stripe assays show that dorsal retinal axons prefer to grow on EphB receptor stripes supporting an attractive guidance mechanism. In vivo disruption of ...
متن کاملTopographically Specific Effects of ELF-1 on Retinal Axon Guidance In Vitro and Retinal Axon Mapping In Vivo
Topographic maps, which maintain the spatial order of neurons in the order of their axonal connections, are found throughout the nervous system. In the visual retinotectal projection, ELF-1, a ligand in the tectum, and its receptors in the retina show complementary gradients in expression and binding, indicating they may be positional labels for map development. Here we show that ELF-1 acts as ...
متن کاملIt's All in the Assay A New Model for Retinotectal Topographic Mapping
Ephrin-As have been implicated as topographic mapping labels in the retinotectal system, but the underlying molecular mechanisms for their activities in this context remain somewhat mysterious. Hansen et al. (this issue of Neuron) developed an assay that reveals new mechanisms for ephrins in topographic mapping and suggest a model whereby retinal axons grow and terminate in the tectum via a bal...
متن کاملLoss-of-function analysis of EphA receptors in retinotectal mapping.
EphA tyrosine kinases are thought to act as topographically specific receptors in the well-characterized projection map from the retina to the tectum. Here, we describe a loss-of-function analysis of EphA receptors in retinotectal mapping. Expressing patches of a cytoplasmically truncated EphA3 receptor in chick retina caused temporal axons to have reduced responsiveness to posterior tectal rep...
